Strategies for Using Schreckwulfen
Schreckwulfen excel as aggressive, close-combat monsters that disrupt and lock down enemies. They reward bold, timing-focused play.
- Terror & Disruption (Howl at the Moon) Use the Howl early in activation to pin and suppress nearby enemies (especially infantry or supports). This creates openings for your other units or sets up a devastating follow-up charge. The Surprise Charge synergy makes the subsequent assault even deadlier. Save for when multiple enemy units are clustered within 8″.
- Aggressive Close Combat Assaults Leverage Fast movement, Deadly (3), and +2 Pen claws to close quickly and shred infantry or lighter vehicles. They are line-breakers — charge into pinned or softened targets. Fearless + Hard to Kill lets them win (or stalemate) prolonged melees, locking enemies in unfavorable fights while you activate elsewhere.
- Counter-Attack Reserve Deploy them centrally or in cover as a reactive force. Use their speed to respond to enemy breakthroughs, Howl to disrupt, then counter-charge. Excellent in Assault Platoons alongside Stahltruppen or other horrors (Totenkorps, Nachtjäger).
- Surging for Toughness Assign a Surging Rift Die for 8+ Damage Value when expecting heavy fire. This makes them extremely resilient (combined with Hard to Kill). Time exhaustion carefully — they lose mobility afterward, so plan an escape or follow-up.
- Combined Arms Synergy
- Pair with indirect fire/mortars or gravity weapons to pin targets before the charge.
- Support with walkers or Nachtjäger for multi-angle pressure.
- Heroes with Rift Mastery can boost them further.
- Use in monstrous horde-style lists for psychological and activation pressure.
What to Avoid / Weaknesses
- Prolonged Open-Field Firefights: They are melee monsters — avoid static shooting duels. Get into cover or close fast.
- Early Exhaustion: Losing Fast makes them easier to kite or focus down.
- Anti-Tank/Heavy Weapons: Tough but not invincible — dedicated AT or high-volume fire (e.g., Tesla, automatics) can still hurt.
- Isolated Use: They benefit from army support to pin/suppress targets first.
- Large Bases/Wide Formation: Watch positioning in tight terrain.
Overall Playstyle: Schreckwulfen embody Axis horror tactics — fast, scary, and hard to put down. They force opponents to react (often waste activations or resources) while you control the tempo. In 1250–1500 pt games, 1–2 squads provide strong close-combat threat and Rift synergy.
